Do you want to work with humanoid robots in a team environment that is challenging and fun? Do you want to work with computer vision, robotics, embedded systems, or artificial intelligence? Do you want to connect with students in different years and postgraduate students who are highly motivated and work on interesting research topics? How about developing expertise in an area that could become your final year project or having the chance to travel and compete internationally?

These are just some of the reasons to join. You will also have the opportunity to develop key skills that improve your CV and prepare you for a career in industry or research. There are leadership opportunities within the team and the possibility of committee roles within RoboCup itself if your interests lie in this direction.

If this sounds good to you, then read on.

How we work

RoboEireann is run as an extra-curricular activity.

Usually we meet once a week, either in the lab or virtually. Lab meetings are usually 2-3 hours so that we have enough time to get useful things done.

We work in Ubuntu Linux (with the LTS release, e.g. 20.04). To coordinate development by a large team over many years we use git and GitHub. The majority of our code development uses C++ but we also work a little with shell scripts and python.

We use Microsoft Teams for online meetings and team communications. Some of our data and files require a google account to access.

How to join up

In order to join:

  • you must be enthusiastic, motivated, and interested in this robotics activity
  • You should enjoy coding and not find it that difficult. Of course, you can learn more in the team, but writing code is a key part of the activity
  • You should be willing to attend the lab session at least once every couple of weeks and preferably once a week
  • You need to have a laptop, ideally set up to dual boot linux and preferably not a macbook (but talk to us in any case)
  • You need a google account and github account

If you are ready to go, contact a faculty member or other member of the team to get signed up and get information about the next team meetings.

We look forward to working with you!
